The Klevgränd team is on a roll! A few weeks ago they released DAW Cassette, an inexpensive old school tape deck emulation plugin (a no-brainer if you’re into lo-fi, haunting sounds, or simply if you would like to warm up some cold digital tracks!). Today they introduce DAW LP, a vinyl player simulation plugin.
It’s true, neither of these plugins is particularly groundbreaking (if you are a desktop/laptop user, there are plenty of tape simulators around, and the good old free iZotope Vinyl is still around, albeit quite outdated). Yet, these Klevgränd plugins come with no-frills interfaces, a solid set of features and an inviting intro price.
DAW Cassette brings back the magic era of the 1980’s by emulating the sound of a tape deck inside a DAW. Saturation, distortion, noise, wobble, it’s all there. Among other things, you can reduce tape quality, head quality and motor quality to age your sound and choose metal, chrome or normal tape options.
DAW LP allows you to simulate scratched vinyl records, dusty pickup needles and rusty cables. You can even switch between 50 Hz hum and 60 Hz hum!
As said, DAW Cassette and DAW LP ooze with character and are both fun to use. If I had to pick one I’d go with DAW Cassette, simply because I’m a sucker for that ’80s sound and I find the vinyl trick a bit ‘old’.
If you’re an iOS musician, you should probably get both. Not only because they’re pretty affordable, but also because there aren’t really many quality vinyl and tape emulations for iOS devices that support the Audio Unit Extension format.
