Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the pleasure of working on the Elastic Melody review, exploring the latest offering from MoMinstruments and Oliver Greschke.
This app is not just another addition to the iOS music production toolkit; it’s a fresh take on melody creation that builds on the legacy of classic analog sequencers, and of its siblings, Elastic Drums and Elastic FX.
In the developer’s words, being “a big fan of Dave Smith’s (RIP) DSI Evolver sequencer and synthesizer, Elastic Melody is an attempt to create something similar. Intuitive Design and Polyrythmic Potential
While working on this Elastic Melody review, the first thing that struck me about the app was its focus on intuitive design. Sure, Elastic Melody does come with tooltip help and a web-based mini guide, but honestly, I didn’t find myself needing them. The app is just that user-friendly!
Elastic Melody app features three tracks, each with a fairly basic yet good-sounding analog-style subtractive oscillator connected to its sequencer. This setup allows for independent control of sequence start/end and step length/speed, which opens up a world of polyrhythmic possibilities.
The ability to create complex, interweaving patterns is at your fingertips, and it feels like you’re conducting an electronic orchestra with just a few taps and swipes. And if you’re wondering how to change the octave of a note, it’s just a matter of holding your finger on a note and dragging it up or down.
Elastic Automation
The sequencer’s real magic, however, lies in its “elastic” automation. For each of the 14 parameters per synth engine, you can draw value changes in an automation window. This feature is incredibly tactile, and it feels like you’re molding the sound directly. It’s a dynamic process that encourages experimentation and can lead to happy accidents that might just become the centerpiece of a new track.
Master Effects and Song Mode
The master section includes four effects: EQ, Chorus/Flanger, Delay, and Reverb, all of which can be easily automated and turned on or off. The effects add depth and character to the sound, and automating them in real-time is a breeze.
The song mode is another highlight, allowing you to arrange patterns into longer compositions with ease (just drag and drop!). The process is intuitive, and the ability to duplicate, rename, and delete patterns makes it a versatile tool for song construction.

Elastic Melody Review – Final Thoughts
After spending time with Elastic Melody, I can confidently say it’s a powerful tool for musicians and producers looking for an intuitive and expressive way to create melodies. Its features, combined with a user-friendly interface, make it a valuable addition to the iOS music app ecosystem.
Whether you’re looking to sketch out ideas or craft intricate patterns for performance or even songwriting sessions, Elastic Melody offers a compelling experience that stands out in the crowded field of iOS music apps.
While Elastic Melody may not include some of the advanced features found in other contemporary sequencers (generative options, etc.), it’s intentionally designed as a modern, mobile reinterpretation of the classic analog step sequencer—take it for what it is. I just wish there was a fourth track available, it would make Elastic Melody a perfect match for one of my all-time favorite synths, the Vermona PerFourmer mk2!
It will be interesting to see how the app evolves, but as it stands, I’m thoroughly impressed by its streamlined workflow and intelligent design. And at $9.99, it offers remarkable value for its feature set!
