Do You Remember iZotope Trash?

iZotope, now part of Native Instruments, has brought back its beloved Trash distortion plugin in a new modern version simply called “Trash”. First introduced in 2003 (not so long after the other iconic, free Vinyl plugin), Trash became a go-to tool for producers and engineers looking to creatively mangle and transform their audio in extreme ways.

The new Trash retains the best features and distortion algorithms from Trash 2, while adding an updated interface, new features, and some surprises. Notably, iZotope has released a free version called Trash Lite to give everyone a taste of its mangling potential.

Trash is by far one of my favorite plugins for years now, and the new one has a ‘scream’ variable parameter which is great with an LFO. – Arca

Trash Workflow

At the heart of Trash are two powerful modules:

  1. The Trash module provides access to over 60 distortion algorithms ranging from subtle saturation to aggressive digital destruction. An XY pad allows you to blend between four distortion types.
  2. The Convolve module lets you combine the distortion with impulse responses of real-world objects, spaces, and devices. Over 600 impulse responses are included, from tin cans to piano cabinets. The XY pad provides morphing between four IRs.

Other new features include an envelope follower, a “dice roll” button to randomize settings for creative inspiration, a scream filter, and auto-gain to tame the output.

Trash also includes an easy-to-use multiband mode that allows you to apply different distortion and convolution settings to up to four frequency bands. This allows for detailed sound shaping and tonal balance.

While the full Trash provides deep control, the free Trash Lite version is no slouch. It includes the core Trash distortion module with all 60+ algorithms, the randomizer, and auto-gain. So you can still do serious damage to your audio for free.

Pricing and Availability

Trash runs as a VST, AU, and AAX plugin on macOS and Windows. Trash Lite is free, while the full version is available for an intro price of $79 ($99 regular). Owners of Trash 2 can upgrade for $29.

An iOS version of Trash is also available for iPad. The app is a free download, with an in-app purchase of $19.99 to unlock the full feature set.

It’s Good To Have You Back

I have fond memories of the original version, and if you’re a producer or sound designer looking to add creative distortion and grit to your tracks, Trash is definitely worth checking out, especially with the free Lite version. The combination of distortion algorithms, convolution IRs, and multiband control provide a huge range of options for transforming your sounds in unique ways.
