When a company with a history like Eventide releases a new reverb, it’s worth paying attention. Eventide has been a pillar of recording technology since 1971, famously revolutionizing the industry in 1975 with the H910 Harmonizer, the world’s first commercially available digital effects unit. Their legendary studio processors have been instrumental on countless records, so any new effect from them carries the weight of that legacy.
With Temperance Pro, Eventide continues this tradition of innovation (confirmed by the fact that Temperance Pro is covered by a United States Patent). Building on the foundation of the recently released Temperance Lite, this new plugin presents a different approach to spatial effects, one that is fundamentally musical.
What Is “Modal” Reverb?
Temperance Pro operates on a principle called modal reverb. Instead of using algorithms to simulate room reflections or static impulse responses to capture them, this method constructs a virtual space from thousands of individual resonators, each tuned to a specific musical note. Think of it as a room filled with invisible tuning forks that resonate when your audio passes through.
This approach builds a reverberant space from musical tones, not sterile geometry, making the reverb itself inherently musical. With Temperance Pro, Eventide provides deep control over this environment, allowing users to “tune” their spaces with a high degree of precision.
Taking Control
The free Lite version provided a glimpse into this technology, but Temperance Pro offers the full suite of controls. The plugin’s strength lies in its ability to selectively emphasize certain notes within the reverb.
There are three methods for this:
- Manual Mode: A straightforward approach where you select a scale or a group of notes for the reverb to focus on. It’s ideal for tracks that remain in a consistent key.
- Sequence Mode: Here, you can program the reverb to follow your song’s chord progression. The character of the space shifts in sync with your music, its decay blooming in harmony with each chord change, integrating the effect directly into the composition.
- MIDI Mode: For performance and improvisation, you can play the reverb’s harmonic structure in real-time from a MIDI keyboard, turning the effect into an expressive part of your setup.
Further controls like Target Select determine whether the tuned notes appear in the early reflections or the tail, while Note Width adjusts the focus from sharp, single-note resonances to broader, chorus-like textures. This level of musical detail is what sets the plugin apart.
From Real Rooms to Impossible Spaces
Temperance Pro includes 29 distinct spaces, ranging from the realistic to the experimental. It features convincing rooms, halls, and plates, with several designed by acoustics pioneer Ralph Kessler—a significant detail for those invested in high-quality spatial audio. These are not generic presets; they possess real character.
The plugin also contains synthetic spaces that could not exist in the physical world, opening up avenues for sound design. The Offset control can pitch-shift the entire resonant structure of a space, enabling the creation of shimmering textures or dark, dissonant drones that remain spatially coherent.
Professional Features and Workflow
Beyond its innovative modal approach, Temperance Pro includes features expected from professional-grade plugins. Ultra-low latency (less than 1ms) makes it suitable for tracking and live performance, while fully automatable controls integrate seamlessly into modern production workflows.
Dual Mono mode offers independent processing for stereo sources, and A/B comparison states let you quickly evaluate different settings. Eco Mode optimizes CPU usage for systems running multiple instances or complex sessions. Additional features include Kill Dry switch, Notes Lock, Mix Lock, and input/output faders with level metering for precise control.
With over 120 creative and production-focused presets, including 11 tutorial presets, users can immediately explore the plugin’s capabilities or learn its unique approach to spatial processing. The plugin supports AAX 64-bit, AU 64-bit, and VST3 64-bit formats on Windows 10+ and macOS 10.14+, ensuring compatibility with major DAWs and operating systems.
Is It Worth the Upgrade from Temperance Lite?
As we featured on ANR previously, Eventide made the Lite version available for free. Users who downloaded it can crossgrade to the Pro version for $79. Given the expanded feature set, this is a compelling offer. The three spaces in Lite serve as a great introduction, but the 29 spaces in Pro, along with the sequencer and MIDI control, transform it into a powerful creative tool.
For those who missed the promotion, Temperance Lite is available from Plugin Boutique to test the concept. The full price for Temperance Pro is $179.
Temperance Pro offers a new workflow, encouraging producers to treat reverb not as a static background element, but as an active, musical component of a production. In a market crowded with similar effects, that alone makes it a noteworthy release.
