Scaler Detector: Focused Chord Analysis Tool at Just $9 (or Free)

Fab, October 23, 2025October 24, 2025

Scaler Music has carved out a niche in the music theory plugin market with its flagship Scaler series, and now the company has released a streamlined offshoot. Scaler Detector strips away the composition bells and whistles to focus on what many producers need most: instant harmonic analysis. Available as VST, AU, and AAX plugin plus standalone application for macOS and Windows, this tool is being offered at $9 or free for existing Scaler 3 owners.

What Scaler Detector Does

At its core, Scaler Detector identifies the harmonic content of whatever you feed it, whether MIDI or audio. Hit the Detect button and play in real time, or drag and drop audio and MIDI files directly onto the interface for instant analysis. The plugin returns a ranked list of compatible musical scales based on goodness of fit, displaying detected chords in a chord panel with the analysis prioritizing Major and Minor keys where multiple matches exist.

Unlike comprehensive music theory workstations that bundle progression builders and melody generators, Scaler Detector keeps things direct. You play something, it tells you what it is, and suggests scales that work with those notes.

Built-In Piano Sound

The included realistic piano sound lets you audition detected chords and explore suggested scales without routing to external instruments. Whether analyzing files or playing live with a MIDI keyboard, the internal piano gives immediate sonic feedback. Click any chord in the interface to hear it, or use Bind Keys to trigger complex chords with single notes. This makes Scaler Detector immediately useful even in standalone mode, with no DAW or third-party instruments required.

Performance Tools

The Bind Keys and Voice Grouping functions prove particularly useful when searching for new harmonic inspiration. Bind Keys lets you trigger detected chords with single notes, making it easy to experiment with voicings you might not naturally reach for. Voice Grouping keeps those chords within a consistent register, ensuring smoother transitions and more playable results.

The drag-and-drop export to MIDI makes it simple to capture interesting progressions and continue developing them elsewhere. For more elaborate compositional workflows, progression building, and advanced chord manipulation, that’s where the full Scaler 3 comes in. Scaler Detector intentionally stays lean, leaving the heavier creative lifting to its fuller-featured sibling.

Detection Accuracy and Limitations

Scaler Detector shares the same detection engine as Scaler 3, which has seen continuous refinement. Recent updates to the Scaler platform improved chord movement analysis and MIDI handling, and those gains carry over here.

As Scaler Music emphasizes, the audio detection performs best with well-recorded material and cleaner arrangements. Isolated instruments, clearly defined chord progressions, and minimal frequency overlap produce the most accurate results. However, the system can struggle with complex, overlapping sounds and dense layered arrangements where multiple harmonic elements compete for attention.

This limitation is also inherent to the technology itself. A solo piano or guitar part will yield more consistent results than a fully produced rock mix with drums, bass, guitars, and vocals all playing simultaneously. The threshold control helps manage input sensitivity when analyzing audio, though results will vary based on source complexity.

That said, according to the developers, “significant improvements to audio detection are already on our roadmap for both Scaler 3 and Scaler Detector in the new year”.

MIDI detection handles polyphonic material more reliably since the note data is already discrete and unambiguous.

Workflow Integration

Scaler Detector functions both as a plugin within your DAW and as a standalone app. The standalone mode is particularly useful for analyzing Spotify tracks, YouTube videos, or any audio playing on your system, ideal for ear training or transcription work. The built-in piano sound makes this especially practical for quick harmonic analysis sessions.

Within a DAW, you can drop it on a MIDI track to analyze what you’re playing live, or use sidechain routing (where supported) to analyze audio from another track. The official tutorial video demonstrates these workflows in Ableton Live, Logic Pro, and other hosts.

Value Proposition and Alternatives

At $9, Scaler Detector occupies an interesting price point. For Scaler 3 owners, it’s simply free, a logical addition to an existing toolkit.

For users focused primarily on audio analysis, zplane’s deCoda represents a more specialized alternative, though at a significantly higher price point (€49). deCoda excels at song deconstruction, automatically identifying not just chords and keys but also song structure elements like verses, choruses, and bridges. This structural analysis makes it particularly valuable for musicians learning cover songs or studying arrangement techniques. The software includes practice-oriented features like flexible looping, tempo adjustment without pitch change, and Focus EQ for isolating specific elements of a mix.

However, deCoda’s focus remains squarely on audio analysis and transcription. Unlike deCoda, Scaler Detector runs as both a standalone app and a VST/AU/AAX plugin, making it usable on audio or MIDI tracks in any DAW. It also supports real-time MIDI input, MIDI routing, and integration with Scaler 3 for binding and performance features, whereas deCoda is standalone only and doesn’t support MIDI input or output.Where deCoda helps you learn existing songs, Scaler Detector bridges analysis and creation.

Another option is HoRNet SongKey MK4, usually available for €13,99. This plugin includes tempo/BPM detection and outputs MIDI clock in its standalone mode, making it particularly useful for DJs and live performers who need to sync hardware to incoming audio. It displays dual chromagrams (one for chord recognition, one for key recognition) and relies on a neural network trained on thousands of songs. Where SongKey MK4 leans toward analysis and sync capabilities, Scaler Detector emphasizes immediate musical experimentation with its performance features and scale suggestions.

System Requirements and Availability

Scaler Detector runs on macOS 10.14 or higher (including native Apple Silicon support) and Windows 8 or higher. It’s compatible with all major DAWs, including Ableton Live, Logic Pro, FL Studio, Cubase, Studio One, Bitwig, Reaper, and Pro Tools.

An iOS version is scheduled for Q4 2025, though it will be a separate App Store purchase not included with desktop licenses.

If You’ve Never Heard Of Scaler

Scaler Music has built its reputation on making music theory accessible without dumbing it down. The original Scaler launched in 2017, evolving through Scaler 2’s performance features and audio detection before arriving at Scaler 3’s plugin hosting and multi-track capabilities. Our Scaler 3 review noted how the software 3 balanced depth with usability, a philosophy that extends to this focused detection tool.

For producers who already own Scaler 2 or work with related tools like Scaler EQ, Detector slots into existing workflows without requiring new conceptual frameworks.

Final Thoughts

Scaler Detector delivers focused functionality at a price that removes most barriers to entry. For educators, transcribers, and producers who regularly analyze reference material, it might be a tool that pays for itself quickly. For Scaler 3 owners, it’s a free bonus that handles detection tasks without loading the full application. Scaler Detector is available now directly from Scaler Music and PluginBoutique for $9, or free for all Scaler 3 users.
