Eventide Temperance Lite: A FREE Reverb That Follows Your Notes

October 1, 2025October 1, 2025

Eventide has released Temperance Lite, a free reverb plugin that takes an entirely new approach to spatial effects. Available as a free download through December 31, 2025, this groundbreaking tool introduces modal reverb technology that allows users to control reverb resonances using the familiar 12-note chromatic scale. Unlike traditional algorithmic and convolution reverbs, Temperance Lite lets producers decide which musical notes bloom or fade within their chosen space.

A 40-Year Dream Realized

The concept behind Temperance Lite has been decades in the making. Tony Agnello, Eventide’s Resident Fossil, has been envisioning a musical reverb since 1985 when he met Isaak Vigdorchik, who believed that Cremona violins’ plates were sanded to ring out at the 12 notes of the musical scale. After developing the SP2016’s reverb algorithms years earlier, Agnello wondered if notes could be in the room itself. The idea required modeling a room in exquisite detail with processing power that seemed unattainable at the time.

Thanks to advances in computing and the work of Eventide’s development team, this vision has finally become reality. Temperance Lite responds musically in ways previously impossible, allowing artists to create spaces that enhance their musical intent rather than working against it.

How Modal Reverb Works

Modal reverb technology has existed conceptually for decades but was previously impossible to realize in real time due to its computational demands. Temperance models reverberant spaces as thousands of independent resonances, all adjustable in real time. While convolution reverbs capture a space in a single snapshot, Temperance builds it piece by piece, letting users shape how each mode decays or resonates.

Think of it like a room filled with thousands of tuning forks, each tuned to a different frequency across the entire audio range. The largest fork handles deep 20 Hz rumbles, while the tiniest one rings at 20 kHz. Temperance Lite gives users control over the loudness and decay rate of each tuning fork, creating an entirely new approach to reverb that provides control over how every resonance in the space behaves.

Here’s a quick overview of some of the presets:

Key Features and Controls

At the center of Eventide Temperance Lite is the Temper Knob, which controls how much tempering is applied to the reverb. When set to noon, the plugin behaves like a traditional reverb. Turn it clockwise, and chosen notes ring out more prominently within the space. Turn it counterclockwise, and those notes are softened while everything else takes over.

The plugin includes three distinct spaces. Bright Room is based on the legendary SP2016 reverb, offering a classic space with the rare ability to make vocals, instruments, and drums sit perfectly in a mix. Large Studio features a reverb donated by Dr. Ralph Kessler, a pioneer in the study of acoustic spaces. Synthetic Space showcases unnaturally evolving reverb textures crafted in-house to demonstrate what modal reverb technology can achieve.

The NoteScape Visualizer displays the emphasized and de-emphasized notes sustaining and decaying, visually mapping the musicality of the reverb in real time. A built-in spectrum analyzer and range sliders let users focus on specific parts of the frequency spectrum. Standard reverb controls include Mix, Decay, Size, Pre-delay, and Output Level, along with options for adjusting the global tuning reference and fine-tuning in cents.

With latency under 1 ms, Temperance Lite is suitable for both tracking and live performance. The plugin comes with 15 presets designed for applications ranging from creative soundscapes to vocal and drum spaces.

Early Hands-On Impressions

After testing it in a couple of sessions, there’s a distinct advantage in being able to mold the space around melodic material. For example, boosting notes that resonate with a vocal line or thinning out reverb in clashing frequencies brings a subtle clarity that would otherwise require complicated EQ automation. When pushed to extremes, the plugin can generate pads and atmospheric washes—some early users compared this to layered synth textures, especially obvious with 100% wet settings. The ability to shape reverberation so musically is already finding fans among those experimenting on vocals, synths, and pads I just wonder if we will see a full version, and if the plugin will find its way also on the popular Eventide H90 multi-effect pedal.

Eventide Temperance Lite – Availability and Compatibility

Temperance Lite is available now as a free download from eventideaudio.com through December 31, 2025. Users must register the license by March 31, 2026, and an iLok account is required, though no physical dongle is needed. The plugin is compatible with 64-bit AAX, AU, and VST3 formats on macOS 10.14 and later, and Windows 10 and later. A minimum SSE 4.2 processor is needed to run Temperance Lite on Windows.
