From Brian Eno’s Oblique Strategies cards to Matthew Herbert’s manifesto, we have seen very different ways of working within constraints.
We’ve all been there. Sometimes an empty page is full of too many possibilities. After all, “the enemy of art is the absence of limitations”, quoting Orson Welles.
This is why a few weeks ago I decided to do a little experiment. I was leaving for a trip abroad and I wanted to have a small, portable setup (it had to fit in my carry-on!) for hands-on DAWless jams. Also, I wanted to add a specific creative constraint (more on this later).
Fantastic Five Here’s what I brought with me:
KORG Volca Sample OK Go limited edition
Erica Synths Acidbox ii
KORG Mini Kaoss Pad 2S
the always inspiring Teenage Engineering OP-1
Keith McMillen K-MIX
