Sonarworks SoundID Tools: Free Dolby Atmos Mobile App

Fab, March 27, 2026March 27, 2026

Sonarworks has long been the go-to name for mixing accuracy — over 300,000 studios trust SoundID Reference, and more than 100 Grammy-winning engineers rely on it daily. So when the Latvian company teams up with Dolby to solve one of immersive audio’s most persistent headaches — the fact that your ears aren’t the same as my ears — it’s worth paying attention.

The Sonarworks SoundID Tools mobile app launched on March 25, 2026, available free on both the App Store and Google Play. It does something deceptively simple: it uses your phone’s camera to scan your head and ears, then generates a personalized Dolby Headphone Personalization profile calibrated to how you specifically perceive spatial audio. No two creators hear a soundstage the same way, and this profile accounts for that.

The Problem It’s Actually Solving

Anyone who’s mixed in Dolby Atmos on headphones knows the frustration. You pan something to the left and slightly above — and you’re never quite sure if that placement is translating as intended, or if it’s just your particular ear shape playing tricks. Head-related transfer functions (HRTFs), which govern how we perceive sound directionality, are as individual as fingerprints.

Genelec’s Aural ID tackled this same problem years ago using smartphone video, so the underlying idea isn’t brand new. What’s different here is Dolby’s direct involvement — this isn’t a workaround or third-party approximation. The profile that comes out is a first-party Dolby artifact, fully compatible with the Dolby Atmos Renderer and native Dolby Atmos rendering in supported DAWs.

How It Works in Practice

The workflow is genuinely frictionless:

1. Download the free SoundID Tools app (iOS or Android) 2. Scan your head and ears using your phone’s camera 3. Export your Dolby Headphone Personalization profile 4. Load it into the Dolby Atmos Renderer or a compatible DAW 5. Mix with the confidence that what you’re hearing reflects your actual spatial perception

At launch, DaVinci Resolve is confirmed as a supported DAW, with more DAW integrations following shortly. If you’re working in Pro Tools, Logic, or Nuendo with Atmos workflows, keep an eye on the Sonarworks supported DAWs page for updates.

Why This Matters Right Now

The Dolby Atmos creator ecosystem has exploded — partly driven by Apple Music’s spatial audio push, partly by streaming platforms making immersive delivery table stakes. But the monitoring tools have lagged behind. Most engineers working outside dedicated Atmos rooms are flying slightly blind on headphones, relying on generic HRTFs baked into renderers that weren’t built to match their specific anatomy.

I can’t help thinking this is the kind of tool that should have existed three years ago, when Atmos started landing in everyday DAW workflows. The fact that it took until 2026 to get a free, Dolby-sanctioned HRTF personalisation app says something about how slowly the infrastructure catches up to the format. But here we are — better late than never.

Sonarworks CPO and Co-Founder Martins Popelis framed it clearly: “Our mission has always been to help creators hear their mixes accurately and with confidence, no matter where they work.” Dolby’s David Gould echoed that, noting the app enables “more accurate Dolby Atmos monitoring” by combining both companies’ strengths.

The Bigger Signal

This collaboration signals something broader: the personalization layer is becoming non-negotiable in professional immersive audio. Generic monitoring — whether via flat headphones or uncalibrated speakers — is increasingly being called out as insufficient. The fact that Dolby itself is now co-signing a free consumer app to fix this says the format is maturing past early-adopter territory and into mainstream professional practice.

It’s also worth noting that Sonarworks has been building toward this vision for a while. Their Virtual Monitoring PRO — one of our top picks for 2025 — already takes personalization to an extreme: it uses a binaural in-ear measurement microphone to capture exactly how your room and your speakers interact with your ears, then recreates that environment on any pair of headphones. The SoundID Tools app feels like the natural, more accessible sibling of that technology — same philosophy, zero hardware required, free of charge.

For ANR readers already running SoundID Reference in their studios, this is an easy addition to the workflow — and a compelling argument for Atmos newcomers to get set up properly from day one. If you want a deeper look at how SoundID Reference integrates into a calibrated room, our SoundID Reference review is still a solid reference point. And if you’re exploring headphone mixing tools more broadly, our Realphones 2.0 coverage covers the competitive landscape well.

How about you — are you mixing Dolby Atmos on headphones regularly, and has the HRTF problem ever caught you out?

Pricing and Availability

The Sonarworks SoundID Tools app is free to download and free to use. Dolby Atmos profile creation carries no charge.
