WoodSynth Review – Versatile, MPE-Friendly Synth for iOS and Mac

ANR Team, December 9, 2024December 10, 2024

Introduction

Wim Cliquet, the mastermind behind Woodman’s Immaculate Maple Syrup Studio (WIMS), has created a range of impressive plugins, with WoodSynth standing out as their flagship instrument. This supersynth is part of a collection that includes Woodpressor, Woodstepper, WoodTroller, and the recently released WoodVerberator.

WoodSynth is a 4 layers MPE supporting synthesizer with 3 VCO’s + samples or wavetable source. It pays homage to vintage and hardware synthesizers, offering CV out capability for modular synthesizers. A notable feature is its recent addition of MIDI 2.0 support in October 2023, making it one of the few iOS synthesizers compatible across iOS and MacOS with this functionality.

WIMS plugins share a consistent visual design language, featuring an “automatic dark mode” that’s easy on the eyes. The familiar interface allows users to quickly adapt to different WIMS plugins, with color schemes being the primary distinguishing factor. Edits are easily accessible, and those familiar with basic ADSR concepts should feel comfortable exploring any WIMS plugin.

One of WoodSynth’s standout qualities is its consistent and high-quality updates. Recent major additions, such as Wavetable support and a comprehensive step sequencer, continue to enhance its value.

UI/Overview

Synthesizer Structure

WoodSynth is a powerful synthesizer featuring four independent layers, each functioning as a synthesizer in its own right. Every layer comprises three Voltage Controlled Oscillators and a sample or wavetable-based source. These components operate individually, enabling the creation of rich soundscapes and offering detuning capabilities for added depth.

Layer Organization

Each layer is associated with an Oscillator and color-coded for easy identification:

  • Layer 1: Blue
  • Layer 2: Green
  • Layer 3: Orange
  • Layer 4: Pink

This structure allows for programming sounds ranging from simple to highly complex. The intuitive editing process often requires minimal knob adjustments, making WoodSynth an enjoyable synthesizer for experimentation. This user-friendly approach is likely to make it popular among preset makers in the near future.

Interface Design

The UI is visually appealing and highly scalable, a standout feature among synthesizer apps. Users can adjust the window size, and an “advanced mode” can be activated by clicking the “expand” box. The 2022 “Expanded” view displays all UI controls in a single window. Even in the “unexpanded” mode, deeper controls are accessible via tabs below the touch-bar-style keyboard.

For optimal viewing on iPads, the regular “unexpanded” mode is recommended, allowing users to bring up and dismiss zoomed-in modules as needed.

Key Features

Sequencer

The Sequencer is a significant asset of WoodSynth, deserving special attention. Its capabilities enhance the overall functionality of the synthesizer.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Quadraphonic Multi-Layered Polyphonic Synthesizer with up to 16 voices per layer
  • Key (note) readout display
  • Granular-like capabilities with sample slot inclusion
  • Wide resizability range on both MacOS & iOS
  • Surprisingly low CPU usage despite feature depth
  • Independent operation of each synth for extensive sound design possibilities
  • iCloud User Preset Syncing
  • Real-time waveform visualization of audio signals
  • Individual controls and color coding for each oscillator (3 Oscillators & 1 Sample slot per layer)

Cons:

  • Initial intimidation due to feature depth
  • Potential for ear damage if resonance is not monitored carefully
  • Limited UI resizability on both platforms
  • Possible steep learning curve due to feature complexity
  • No Windows support as of December 2024

Pricing and Closing Comments

Pricing

WoodSynth is typically priced at $79.99 for Mac and $15.99 for iOS devices.

Downloadable PDF guides for all WIMS plugins are available on the Woodman’s Immaculate Maple Syrup Studio website.

Closing Thoughts

WoodSynth offers impressive depth while maintaining consistent compatibility across platforms. Its readable visual design language makes it an excellent choice for those looking to invest in a quality synthesizer compatible with both Mac and iOS devices, especially for creating cross-platform templates.

The synthesizer’s combination of simplicity and depth also makes it a strong candidate for beginners who aren’t easily intimidated by feature-rich instruments. WoodSynth provides a comprehensive platform for both learning and advanced sound design, making it a valuable addition to any digital musician’s toolkit.

Last but not least, make sure to check out WIMS’ entire catalog. I have already added a few other plugin/apps to my wishlist!
