Spotify AI Playlist Feature: Prompting The Perfect Mix

Fab, April 9, 2024April 10, 2024

Text-to-Playlist Is The New Frontier

Spotify has been on a roll lately with innovative features to enhance our music listening experience. First, they tried to wow us with the AI DJ that curates personalized playlists with commentary (pretty gimmicky, if you ask me). Now, they’re taking things a step further by putting the power of playlist creation right in our hands with the new Spotify AI Playlist feature. Call it Spotify’s ChatGPT, or prompt-to-playlist if you like!

Songs to Serenade Your Cat? There You Go

Picture this: you’re in the mood for some tunes, but you don’t want to spend hours handpicking songs (who’s old enough here to remember making mixtapes for a friend’s Walkman?). That’s where AI Playlist comes in. This nifty tool, currently in beta for lucky Spotify Premium users in the UK and Australia, lets you whip up a playlist simply by typing in a prompt.

Want an indie folk playlist to warm your soul on a chilly day? Just ask. Need some chill beats to keep you company during allergy season? AI Playlist has got you covered. The possibilities are (supposedly) endless – you can even reference places, animals, activities, movie characters, or emojis in your prompts. The more creative and specific you get, the better the results. You can even try imaginative prompts like “songs to serenade my cat” or “beats to battle a zombie apocalypse.”, at your risk and peril, of course!

Under the hood, Spotify’s AI is doing some pretty cool stuff. It uses large language models to understand what you’re asking for, then taps into Spotify’s vast music library and personalization data to generate a playlist tailored just for you. The AI even takes into account your listening history and preferences to really nail those recommendations.

Fine-Tuning Your AI-Powered Playlist

But what if the AI doesn’t quite hit the mark on the first try? No worries – you can easily tweak the playlist to perfection. Just give the AI some feedback, like “more upbeat” or “less pop,” and watch it work its magic. If there are any tracks that aren’t vibing with you, a quick swipe left will banish them from the playlist.

Once you’re happy with the mix, just hit “Create” and voila – your shiny new playlist is saved to your library, ready to be enjoyed whenever the mood strikes.

A Convenient Tool for Music Exploration

While AI Playlist isn’t a groundbreaking innovation that will completely transform the way we discover music, it’s a fun and convenient tool for exploring new artists or helping a friend to feel better without spending hours crafting the perfect playlist yourself.

It’s great for those times when you want to quickly generate a playlist for a specific mood or activity without putting in a lot of effort. And because the AI considers your personal taste, there’s a good chance you’ll discover some new tracks or artists that you’ll enjoy.

Spotify AI Playlist – Room for Improvement

As with any new feature, there’s room for improvement. The AI’s interpretation of prompts can sometimes be a bit off, resulting in playlists that don’t quite match what you had in mind. And while the ability to refine playlists is helpful, it would be nice to have even more granular control over the AI’s selections.

Despite these limitations, AI Playlist stands out as one of Spotify’s most practical and useful AI-powered features to date. While some of the company’s previous AI offerings may have felt more like novelties, AI Playlist has the potential to genuinely enhance the music discovery process for users by offering a quick and easy way to generate personalized playlists tailored to their specific moods and preferences.

As Spotify continues to refine and expand this feature, it will be interesting to see how it evolves and what new possibilities emerge. For now, it’s a fun tool to play around with and a low-effort way to discover some new tunes.
