Nerd Synth A2x: AudioKit’s Take on The Nord Lead A1

Fab, April 12, 2024April 12, 2024

The ’90s Are Here Again

Our friends at AudioKit Pro have done it again! They just released an exciting new virtual analog synth called Nerd Synth A2x. Inspired by the classic Nord Lead A1 synth of the 90s, Nerd Synth aims to capture that vibe while adding modern features and conveniences.

If you’re not familiar with AudioKit Pro, they are the brilliant minds behind other iOS music apps like FM Player, the SNESynth chiptune synth, and Synth One. They have a knack for creating powerful yet easy-to-use and affordable music tools.

Classic Waveforms and Filters

At the heart of Nerd Synth are over 40 waveforms modeled after the original Nord Lead A1 synth. You get all the classic analog-style shapes like saws, squares, and noise, which can be sculpted with a variety of vintage-style filters, envelopes, and modulation sources. This allows you to create everything from searing leads to deep basses and lush evolving pads.

Modern Effects and Unison

But Nerd Synth goes beyond a mere emulation by including a range of modern effects like reverb, delay, distortion, ring modulation, and a unique “super FM drop” effect. A built-in unison mode with three different algorithms (Regular, Hyper, and Beast) allows you to instantly fatten up your sound.

Intuitive Interface

Despite its deep synthesis engine, Nerd Synth aims to be easy and intuitive to program. It uses a knob-per-function layout that will be familiar to users of classic synths. An integrated preset browser makes it easy to find and save your favorite sounds. Plus there are a few extra playful touches (no spoiler) that are just the icing on the cake.

Standalone and Plugin

Nerd Synth is available as both a standalone iOS app and an AUv3 plugin that can be used in hosts like GarageBand, Cubasis, AUM, and more. The iPad version takes advantage of the larger screen size with a “stacked” interface that maximizes the available controls.

Pricing, Availability, and Final Thoughts

Nerd Synth A2x is available now on the App Store for an introductory price of $5 (regular price will be $9.99). Early adopters will also receive two free sound bank expansions: “Red Sky Lullaby” and “DMT Cymatics”.

While inspired by vintage Nord synths, Nerd Synth is not an exact clone, but rather a modern take on that classic virtual analog vibe.

I’ve been playing with it for a few hours now and I’m impressed. The sounds are fat, the effects are lush, and the interface is a joy to use. Hats off to Matthew and the rest of the AudioKit team for creating another great iOS synth. Check it out today and add some nerd vibe to your productions!
